Shenanigans: You Must Not Read From The Book. Though, judging by the glowing runes on some people's skin, that was an instruction that was completely disregarded. Oh well. Souls are optional accessories. Some fine costumes, too.

Last night was Lyssa and Paul's 10th Wedding Anniversary at The Driver. Having the first set, I got to play the First Dance - the one that they weren't allowed to have at their original wedding reception.

A couple of weeks ago, I got a message from a couple of friends, saying "Person X is looking for a DJ and we've recommended you", so I got in touch with them. And as a result, ended up doing a four-hour set last night for the Barfleet party at LonCon3/WorldCon 2014 at ExCel, London.

The Barfleet crews are nice folk who put on organised parties at US SF conventions, with bar, cocktails, DJs, and so on (and carefully placed plastic wrap on the floor in front of and behind the bar tables, to ameliorate spillage), and an alleged belief in "responsible drinking to excess". They had a small away team at LonCon3, and were therefore looking for auxiliary crew. Unfortunately, they were also on the road for the fortnight before the event (transporter lag?) (actually, they were touring Scottish whisky distilleries, and filling their luggage with everything that wasn't shipped to the US already), so the mission briefing was ... err ... brief. And necessarily second-hand. Still, I turned up with a recently acquired folding trolley stacked with CD boxes, my decks, and a second-hand netbook with back-up tunes on it (I didn't want to rely on a partially-tested bit of kit for the whole night, so it was a test of concept), was directed to the helpful guy who'd managed the booking, bearing a fine waxed moustache, and headed down to set up in one of the conference suites (well, two, with the dividing wall pulled aside). The Barfleet crew set up their 'dispensary', with plastic tubs of cocktails and serving measures (small jugs), while I hooked my stuff up to the room's PA and one of the con volunteers popped in to wrangle some LED PAR cans for lighting. And then the punters started to turn up (slowly at first), so, on to the music ...

According to one attendee, I made it so ...

Setlist )

¹ At this point the Barfleet crew thanked everyone for attending - and then announced that the cocktails had run out. "These idiots ... people ... in front of the bar with their hands in the air, have in their glasses the last dregs of the Photon Torpedo². These drinks do not like each other. They definitely do not like people. We salute them!" Announcing that the booze has run out does put a certain amount of pressure on the DJ - a bit like the main bridge crew teleporting off mid-battle, turning, as they dissolve, to the remaining ensign and announcing "You have the conn".
² Which I believe is a cocktail analogy of the drip-tray dreg mix.

DJing the Friday night at BiCon this year. Played a few tracks while Ford was sorting out his gear, then handed over to him for a rather fine opening set, before carrying on for the rest of the night myself, including, by vocal request, 'The Dr Who bit', and also a little slot inspired by the weather.

Fourth wedding of the year, and third wedding reception DJ set ... This time we were in the industrial setting of the London Museum Of Water & Steam (formerly the Kew Bridge Steam Museum), with the dance-floor set between the stationary engines and the decks set up in front of the impressive backdrop of one of them. It was rather a warm day (that would be one of my understatements), so fans were strongly in evidence, as were guests sprawled out for a breather. With the groom being a member of The Memepunks, I absolutely had to include a fair few covers and mash-ups, along with a few slower songs for the bride and groom to dance to.

The first Shenanigans of 2014, at the start of May, was the "Unseelie Carnival". Again upstairs at Canal 125, with an extra hour of DJing at the start, and a crowd who seemed willing to trust the DJs and keep dancing even if they weren't familiar with the track - always appreciated!

And the second setlist from last week - this time Jo and Mikk's wedding reception in the rather fine setting of the Brunswick Centre, Whitby, a former Methodist chapel. My decks were set up in the pulpit, which apparently looked quite impressive from the floor. Following some reshuffling of the order of speeches, buffet, first dance and live band, I pulled together an unexpected "background music" set for the first part of the night, with more of a rock set for the dancing.

The Shambles again, now under new management, with a bar extension, and a refurb in process that included some new pool table lights that nearly succumbed to Van Halen's Jump, having an apparent magnetic attraction for the taller attendees. Still, no-one went out of any of the windows, I don't believe there were any concussions this time, and no-one caught fire, so we'll be back again next time, when we get to discover how far the refurb has progressed.

However, without further ado, the setlist ...

This weekend I was honoured to be one of the DJ's offered the chance to DJ at the wedding reception of Fury and Wesley, in a gorgeous location in Derbyshire, surrounded by a large number of reprobates from the Gothic Mobile Infantry. Stonking evening, with some excellent sets by Crispygoth and Borgias, followed by my mine (below). The couple had requested quite a variety of tunes as genre suggestions, resulting in some kind of collision between the Whitby 80s Night and rock, goth and metal nights. Each of the DJs in turn was accused of attempting to kill both the bride and groom, and this morning we were credited, directly or indirectly, with a number of aching bodies to go with the aching heads.

Setlist )

Considerably more of an 80s set than I'd originally intended to play, but that seemed to be what was getting people on the floor at that point in the evening, so I stuck with it ...

An eclectic birthday party (my DJ set was preceded by a pianist and succeeded by a harpist) in a unique setting - the London Canal Museum, housed in a former Ice Warehouse just north of King's Cross, complete with a half-hull of a former canal boat and assorted other canal-related exhibits.

I played a short set early on (it was originally a single-track soundcheck of the mixer connections, but it coincided with the pianist's mid-set break, so it stretched slightly), with a two-hour main set.

New Years Eve with the Shenanigans crowd at Canal 125 for Shenanigans: Voodoo Swamp Fever, with the B-Movie Sound System carrying us over the midnight hour. The night was opened by DJ Ruth, then dBSurfeit and Hamst0r before the B-Movie Sound System. Next set for me, then Psyche to close the night. There was bunting, there were balloons, and there were a bunch of people. Pretty much what's needed for NYE.

And here's what I played ...

Another Whitby Goth Weekend, another Sunday, and back to The Shambles for an 80s Night, with Miss Kitty as the musical navigator while I piloted another overloaded metaphor over the North Yorkshire coastal town, now with added new PA stacks.

Back again in April ... we've already had a couple of requests ...

This one was "The Non-Euclidean Nightmare", so the costumes featured more tentacles and runes than a busy sushi restaurant. On top of that, we had an album preview from CTRL-ALT-DEL, performing from inside a cage at the end of the ground floor. All in all, a pretty busy night - added to the fact that we opened an hour earlier than usual, so had eleven DJs across the two floors. Not yet sure of the total charity take, but pretty much everyone seemed to be having a good time, even the terrified-looking glowing mini shoggoths. (Also, having the band meant running through a rather larger PA rig than usual.)

One again I was on the final slot, following a eclectic and swing/80s set (Stray Cats, Zoot Suit Riot, Thriller among others) from DJ SpunkyLobster. And here's what I played - my orginal planned set lasted until the end of the first track, for a number of reasons, including a CD that wouldn't load in the player and a bar clock that was about three minutes faster than mine ...

The next Shenanigans will be on New Year's Eve, and next weekend I'll be at the Whitby 80s Night at The Shambles on Sunday.

Supporting The Memepunks again, alongside frequent co-defendant collaborator Andy Ravensable. Two sets from The Memepunks this time, playing their usual combination of covers and live mashups on an assortment of unexpected instruments (and kazoos). Andy and I alternated the interval sets, with Andy covering the first, from The Memepunks opening set and Jessie Pie And The Thorn (playing 'ribald country-bluesish Americana'). I then bridged the gap between them and Laurence Owen ('darkly comedic singer-storyteller'), then Andy took up the baton again between him and The Memepunks final set.

And at this point things got a little bizarre. During the gig portion of the evening, there had been a door charge, and we'd been aiming our music selections at the audience for the bands, with high proportion of covers, mashups and so on. Once the bands finished, we found ourselves DJing for three hours to a strange combination of the residual audience from the gig (those who'd not gone home or to Slimelight) and those Rattlesnake Of Angel¹ punters who ventured through the back doors - a strange Upper Street Islington crowd. We got out honour intact, but it did require a certain amount of quick flipping through music collections - and a few more mashups than I'd usually put into a normal set.

Anyhow, without further ado, here's what I played ...

With the title “One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing”, there was really only one way the theme to Saturday's Shenanigans club could go. Admittedly, there were considerably fewer cavemen and women than expected, but we did have a dinosaur on the door for a while. Although we only had the top two floors, it worked pretty well – the sofas had all been moved down to the middle floor, so there was a decent-sized dancefloor, and repeater speakers on the floor with the seating meant that people could tell what was playing upstairs (and make the traditional dash for the stairway during the opening bars). We even had an unexpected barman at the upstairs bar, which saved on stair congestion.

A couple of early technical hitches may have been down to iffy CD burns and temperamental decks, but everything settled down later, though the PA could still have done with a few more Watts, resulting in a certain amount of mixer-tweaking to try to pull as much out of it as possible.

I played the final 1am-2am set, following Judder's Lee Chaos, starting off thematic, and then heading off to some of the edges of my music collection.

”0100-0200” )

Babylon Is Burning was a surprise late addition to the end of the set due to a discrepancy between the barman's watch and the clock I was running off requiring a rapidly-grabbed short track.

The next Shenanigans will be Shenanigans: The Non-Euclidean Nightmare on October 26th at Canal 125, when we will have an album launch party for CTRL+ALT+DEL, and will be opening at 8pm rather than 9pm.

(Also, I'll be DJing at the Memepunks double-set gig on 28th September at Rattlesnake of Angel.)

Last night Victorian Vampyres vs Steampunk Slayers put on another night at Electrowerkz - this time 'Hammer House of Hedonism', featuring cabaret stints from Darren Demondaz and Nigel Osner, live music from AlterRed, Gladstone and The Mysterious Freakshow and DJ sets from Darren, Scott McMahon and me.

I covered the opening set (as people were starting to show up), the first interval (between Nigel and AlterRed), the third interval (Gladstone to The Mysterious Freakshow) and then the final DJ set. The last set was slightly random as for much of it the room was virtually empty (the room, not just the dancefloor) - people had headed down for the fine weather, nicotine and conversation, and the free gig next door at Slimelight, and those who'd not paid for our bands earlier weren't allowed up to hear our DJs - which at least meant that I got to play a random selection of tunes that I fancied hearing over the big PA, targeted at the couple of people around, and if anyone wandered in and started dancing to what was playing (which happened several times), I switched to that as a genre.

Also had the personal win of a member of venue staff asking "What was that track you played straight after that band?" (Brunel by The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing) - followed by them handing me their smartphone so I could note it down for them. I like it when people like being introduced to new music.

A four-hour set for the BiCon Ball this time. For the first time I was DJing almost an entire set from laptop (partly because I didn't fancy shifting several cases of CDs as well as everything else up to Edinburgh on the train). A couple of technical teething issues, which made me glad that I'd also specified having a set of decks as part of the mixer - and a couple of backup CDs to cover troubleshooting time. Think I've worked out what the issue was now, though. Even managed to fit in a number of requests from the DIY Disco submissions - though admittedly some were artists I'd have played anyway! And rather pleased that people kept dancing to Control, including people who I'm pretty certain hadn't heard it before.
