And so, the second night of Lazlar Lyricon III. The previous programme item, a fan-made Live-Action Knightmare morphed fairly smoothly into a table magic demonstration (for which I provide background music), and then, as the last trick finished, I kicked in the main music ...

(As a DJ it's always nice when ...
1. People request a song that you've just queued up as the next track.
2. People request a song about which you'd been thinking "I wonder if anyone would go for ..."
3. People take a chance and stay on the dancefloor for a song you're pretty certain they won't have heard before.)

A four-hour set on the evening after a surprise General Election? That sounds like an excellent idea. As usual with conventions, there were a range of music tastes to cater for, and a couple of times I found myself kicking myself for not having brought a couple of CD that were requested. However, I think I mostly managed to substitute something sufficiently similar to keep the requester happy - if I do another, I'll need to bring an even more eclectic selection. As at some other events, the beginning was quite a slow start, with most people either napping, eating, or getting started in the bar, which meant that part of it was providing background music to a couple sat chatting at the other end of the room (I did ask if they had any requests - they didn't). It also seemed that it was the rock fans who stayed up the latest, which meant that the final part of the set ended up fairly metal.

DJ traumahound and I were asked to DJ for Karen's 40th birthday party this weekend. We were downstairs at The Astronomer on Middlesex Street, which has undergone rather a change since it was the Shooting Star (final resting place of Club Vagabonds) - they've completely re-arranged everything, and added some rather fine booths around the walls (with separate power points and individual dimmer switches - fancy!). Hooked our decks into the venue's built-in speakers, dimmed the lights, and set to ...

Early sets were intentionally a bit mellower, as people were still arriving, getting food, etc, but later we both had people accusing us of trying to kill them (with a combination of requests, birthday girl picks, and our usual taste), and it seemed like a general success. (With a notable moment when it took one guest six minutes to recognise that we were playing his band's song. And he's the singer.)

This time around The 80s Night was moved across the road from our previous venue to RAW Nightclub - bigger bar, bigger sound system, club lights, bigger dancefloor, and the return of my co-DJ, Kat ([personal profile] retrokitty). Also, an even sturdier booth to make it even less likely I'd endanger the punters with my dancing as well as our music.

Ours was the first act in a three-part night - The 80s Night, followed by a rather good Gary Numan tribute band, and then an alternative club night to complete the night.

The evening also saw the welcome resurgence of the (in)famous queue, much to the confusion of the bar staff.

¹ And, at this point, we were asked if there was aircon. There was, and it was already running.

A line-up reshuffle forced by a clash with AntiChrist opened up a slot in the roster for Club 80s, as one of the regulars was off providing tunes to the folks at AC. So Ben generously offered me the open slot.

The LHT Urban Bar how has an understated wood and brown-painted brick exterior (there's only a tiny sliver of the former infamous tiger-striped paintwork visible between it and the neighbouring property). Downstairs is bare bricks and stripped floorboards, with low lighting, round tables, and busy, but not overcrowded, on a Friday evening. Upstairs is the function room - a decent size, with pews providing seating around the edges, a dancefloor, a medium-sized stage with lightbar over, and a good-sized DJ booth next to the mosaic-covered bar (with reasonable cider on tap). (Parking, however, is challenging, this being Whitechapel and next to the hospital, but I lucked out, and spotted a car vacating a spot within eyesight of the bar just as I approached, so quickly nipped in. Public transport is pretty decent, though.)

Musically, Reza and Ben at Club 80s cover both mainstream 80s and the darker, more alternative, electronic, and/or B-side end. I provided my usual approach to the 80s, but following the crowd (who were enthusiastic users of the request sheets laid out at the start), dropped the rock/metal end off.

A good fun night at a good venue.

So, what are you up to on Friday 3rd?

Club 80s is an option.

DJs - Reza (Inertia, Killing Joke), Ben (Elegant Decadence, Tanz Macabre, Planet Earth, Don't You Want Me Baby), and ... DJ Landmine ... wait, that's me! Woohoo!

So, yeah, Urban Bar, 176 Whitechapel Road, E1 1BJ, from 9pm to 2:30am, Friday 3rd March, for an evening of dark and light 80s. Like a Viennetta. Possibly.

First set of the New Year, this time for a community event with secondary elements of birthday celebration. The Cavendish Arms in Stockwell is a short stroll from public transport, and features a comfortable, sofa-filled, main bar area, with a back room that is properly set up for comedy, bands, cabaret, and the like, with a small stage, PA, XLR patch-bay and so on - so we set up a pair of trestles on the stage and got to it. The evening's music was split between me and DJ Frabjous (aka Katy and Lucy) who have also DJ'd for BiCon previously. The first part of the evening was quiet(ish) music to entertain while people arrived and ate (the pub serves rather good pizzas), steadily building up to music to dance to.

Setlists below (with links to a couple of the tracks) )

It seemed to go pretty well, and there are faint thoughts of doing it again as a public event ...

Behind the decks at Tufnell Park Dome again for the Alternative Bring & Buy. The last time I DJed here, a few years ago, it was the middle of August, and stiflingly hot. This time around, it was actually warmer out amongst the stalls than in the DJ booth. DJing with Jonny Hall ("DJ Terminates Here") and Scott McMahon (aka "DJ The Scot"), it gave us an opportunity to play some tracks that tend to be underplayed due to being less dancefloor-friendly. As well as just some random songs to keep up the mood of (or generally entertain) the stallholders and the shoppers, ending with the traditional end-of-sale tag-team, and then a few extra tracks while everything was being tidied away while Scott and Jonny went across the road to set up for the after-party at Aces & Eights.

A gig without photos! In this case because I was acting as one of the interval-and-after DJs, along with The Dandy Demondaz.

The evening's acts were Redhead (a classic guitar-rock four-piece), The Wimmin's Institute (perky pop-punk feminist four-piece playing wry wittiness such as their latest 'Nandos', with added trumpet), and the headliners, playing another of their justly renowned anniversary gigs, The Memepunks.

(Normally, when DJing for a band who play covers, I like to check in advance what they'll play, to ensure that I don't end up playing half their set before they go on stage. When you do that for The Memepunks, you end up with a list of about twenty-five tracks for a ten-song set - considerably more if one of those songs is Slimelight 2000.)

This weekend I headed up to Darlington, to help Lisa and Greig celebrate their wedding anniversary, by playing an assortment of music at their guests until they went away. I was warned that this could take some time (especially if I played their requests), and so it proved ...

The venue, Voodoo, was a pretty cool (and surprisingly extensive) bar in town - a single shop-front bar at street level, opening up by way of a decorated staircase to a labyrinthine series of bar and restaurant rooms, ending up at a large function room. Unfortunately, being so soon after Whitby, the dreaded Whurgy¹ took its toll on the guest list, but a number of people (and an inflatable tyrannosaur) managed to struggle through and make it to the field of balloons on the dancefloor.

The owner being a friend of Lisa and Greig's, the night went on for some time - from half eight until three in the morning - by which time all of the balloons had been burst, the inflatable tyrannosaur had been disassembled into separate body parts (some of which were disconcertingly used for guitar mime), and then reconfigured several times (watching the head drift across the ceiling with a single arm hanging below it was ... odd), and the amplifier had overheated, cut out, and been restarted with the aid of a large portable fan.

Setlist (it's a long one!) )

In the Wellington again for The 80s Night at Whitby. DJing solo this time, for a number of reasons, although Kat lent me her CD collection and acted as a voice-activated index for it. Despite the absence of a number of familiar faces who were away from town, we managed more people through the door than last time.

Now sorting out options for April, but, in the meantime, here's what got played ...

Last week, at reasonably short notice, I ended up DJing for the Midsummer Masquerade at the Royal Victoria Hotel (Holiday Inn) in Sheffield, to entertain the guests after a three course meal accompanied by performances of burlesque (Pansy Cheung and Nenedhel Absynthium), dance (Hype Dance), and sideshow (Preacher Muad'dib), followed by a performance by The Memepunks.

Music before and in between the acts was mostly chosen from Ed Alleyne-Johnson's violin pieces. Once The Memepunks had got everyone on their feet, I followed on for the rest of the night with the requested mix of eighties tunes ...

Last night there was a fundraising concert for The Queer Alternative at Electrowerkz, raising money for our PRIDE attendance.

With doors opening at 8pm, we had three bands, and DJ Wanderlust and myself behind the decks, providing tunes in the intervals (also known as "while people were at the bar"). Opening band were CTRL ALT DEL, then Last July, with Die Kur closing. Before the doors opened, we were asked whether we would like to run on into the night, with the floor becoming the goth floor. (Previous events I've been part of on the top floor have had the floor closed down when the event was over, rather than continuing under the main Slimelight brand.) So, when Die Kur left the stage at midnight, Wanderlust and I continued as Slimelight DJs - as a result, I can now tick off the "DJ'd at Slimelight" box on my DJing CV. One punter did come up as I was heading off, saying that I should do it more often - although I had had to remember how to DJ to goth clubs, after a few years of Club Shenanigans' wider musical remit ...

Anyway, in case anyone is interested, here's what I played ...

Back in the Wellington again this time around, following a late venue change. Because there were a number of nights on that Sunday, we weren't sure what the turnout would be like, but Whitby did us proud again, and the windows were steamed up within about half an hour. Despite some concerns as to the size of the venue, there was enough space on the floor for the skipping, and the conga headed out through the door and back again. There are apparently plans for refurbishment at some point in the future, which may open the venue up further. This night was also grounds for celebration, as Real Gothic had managed to hold Stokomotiv to a draw that afternoon, which meant that, as the visitors, they won the trophy on points ...

Due to the events of the early part of the year, we broke the usual "one song per artist" limit for David Bowie and Prince.

"Hits and Myths", the penultimate Shenanigans. A mix of '80s and '90s, a dash of industrial/EBM and a couple of mashups - and that's how to put together one of my Shenanigans sets...
