This time around The 80s Night was moved across the road from our previous venue to RAW Nightclub - bigger bar, bigger sound system, club lights, bigger dancefloor, and the return of my co-DJ, Kat ([personal profile] retrokitty). Also, an even sturdier booth to make it even less likely I'd endanger the punters with my dancing as well as our music.

Ours was the first act in a three-part night - The 80s Night, followed by a rather good Gary Numan tribute band, and then an alternative club night to complete the night.

The evening also saw the welcome resurgence of the (in)famous queue, much to the confusion of the bar staff.

¹ And, at this point, we were asked if there was aircon. There was, and it was already running.

In the Wellington again for The 80s Night at Whitby. DJing solo this time, for a number of reasons, although Kat lent me her CD collection and acted as a voice-activated index for it. Despite the absence of a number of familiar faces who were away from town, we managed more people through the door than last time.

Now sorting out options for April, but, in the meantime, here's what got played ...

Back in the Wellington again this time around, following a late venue change. Because there were a number of nights on that Sunday, we weren't sure what the turnout would be like, but Whitby did us proud again, and the windows were steamed up within about half an hour. Despite some concerns as to the size of the venue, there was enough space on the floor for the skipping, and the conga headed out through the door and back again. There are apparently plans for refurbishment at some point in the future, which may open the venue up further. This night was also grounds for celebration, as Real Gothic had managed to hold Stokomotiv to a draw that afternoon, which meant that, as the visitors, they won the trophy on points ...

Due to the events of the early part of the year, we broke the usual "one song per artist" limit for David Bowie and Prince.

The Shambles again, now under new management, with a bar extension, and a refurb in process that included some new pool table lights that nearly succumbed to Van Halen's Jump, having an apparent magnetic attraction for the taller attendees. Still, no-one went out of any of the windows, I don't believe there were any concussions this time, and no-one caught fire, so we'll be back again next time, when we get to discover how far the refurb has progressed.

However, without further ado, the setlist ...

Another Whitby Goth Weekend, another Sunday, and back to The Shambles for an 80s Night, with Miss Kitty as the musical navigator while I piloted another overloaded metaphor over the North Yorkshire coastal town, now with added new PA stacks.

Back again in April ... we've already had a couple of requests ...

Miss Kitty and I in the Shambles again, purveyors of cheese to the masses. And a dancefloor that had people on it from the very first track. (Thanks especially to the couple who danced fairly continuously to the first few hours!) We tried to avoid tunes that we'd played at the last two nights, so as not to get too predictable, but people kept requesting them, though occasionally we'd substitute another by the same artist. Other than some interesting fishnet-pattern carpet-burn, there didn't seem to be many injuries from the evening. Thanks again to Team Magenta Moon for organising it all.

More high-temperature cheese predicted around Hallowe'en!

Back in The Shambles again at Whitby, with Miss Kitty, for another 80s night, where we once again filled the night, from a slow start, with an increasing number of enthusiastic bouncing goths from seven until half past eleven ...
(If we can just get people to start emulating the Laughtons queue approach as well, I think we'll have cracked the migration!)

Setlist )

Thanks again to The Shambles for hosting us (and, since that night, offering to be our new permanent home in Whitby), Jo Magenta for organising the event, and, of course, Miss Kitty, for selecting the best of the tunes.

Another Whitby, another 80s night, another venue, another set of decks with Miss Kitty and I behind them. [grin] This time we were in The Shambles. A pretty large venue, with the possibility of ample ventilation and cooler areas, you say? Hah! Once again, the WGW mob did the job with their sauna-effect creation. Mention must also be made of Giolla's new leggings. The windows survived the elephant, and the floor joists survived Jump, allaying fears that we would end up in the market downstairs. Even the skipping didn't cause the decks to stutter. And the walls and windows ran with the blood sweat of the crowd ...

In time-honoured tradition - a playlist ... )

Thanks again to The Shambles for hosting us, Jo Magenta for booking us, and my copilot Miss Kitty for picking exactly the right tunes at the right times. (Any tunes that were not right, or not at the right time, were selected by me.)

Co-piloting the decks with Ms Kitty for an entire evening of 80s¹ at the Metropole on the Sunday of WGW, we were wondering if the size of the room would dampen the classic Laughton's spirit, but the crowd did us proud and managed to recreate the ambience of Whitby's old sauna club. Without the (in)famous queue, the start was slightly slow (rather than a sudden rush of inebriates), but it picked up fairly fast, and by the end the room was filled to capacity, the bar was dry and the crowd weren't ...

Sorry for the time taken to type this up!

Anyhow, just under a month ago [livejournal.com profile] djhamsterboy and I were, through architectural collapse, forced to relocate the Laughton's 80s night to the upstairs room at The Resolution. And this is what we inflicted on the punters ...

Apologies if any tracks are listed incorrectly - we were scribbling a bit at times! And yes, a couple of tracks got played twice - this was usually due to them being requested several hours after being played. And track attribution is a bit iffy, as we were raiding each others collections and making suggestions ...

Last weekend I was given the somewhat surprising (and flattering) opportunity to guest a couple of sets at the famed "Laughton's 80s Night" in Whitby, by [livejournal.com profile] djhamsterboy. There was a certain amount of nerves, but I didn't a) empty the dancefloor or b) get lynched, so I feel I came out ahead, and people seemed to be enjoying themselves, so overall I feel it went well. There were a couple of changes to the "classic" Laughton's formula, due partly to the extra two hours and the new heir to the club.
