These questions have been asked on [livejournal.com profile] feedback, but I thought I'd ask them of my Friends-list to find out what your approaches are:

* Is your Friends list more "the journals you read" or "the people who can see your Friends-only entries"? How do you use your Friends list?

* How do you find the people you add to your Friends list -- interest searches, recommendation, community memberships, something else? How do you decide who to add to your Friends list?

* What sort of "friending policies" do you have in place (even if you don't specifically call them that)? What factors do you take into account before friending or defriending someone?

Here are my answers - too vague to be called a policy, IMHO ...

a) My LJ is 90% Friends-only, therefore my Friends-list is "the people who can I want to be able to read my entries". I use filters to limit my reading list to a reasonable size (one that I can keep on top of). My Friends-list is also a quick way to pull up the LiveJournals of people I know.

b) I tend to add people who I know, or at least have met IRL. Either that, or people who are vouched for by at least one of my existing Friends who I trust.

c) If someone 'Friends' me, I check to see whether we know anyone in common (and whether the person in common is someone who I trust, and whose judgement I value). If not, I'll check whether we have any interests in common, or whether there's any obvious reason for the connection being made. I tend not to 'Friend' people who I've not met if they don't actually introduce themselves, as that suggests the use of a random search. I tend not to 'defriend' someone, unless I no longer wish them to read my F-locked posts.
