[grin] I won't ask whether anyone here knows anything about champagne, but I don't, personally.

We've got some bottles in the office, left over from an event, and the Fundraising department is wondering where on the scale of "good" to "pour down sink with nose held shut" they are ...

According to the label, it's "Sarcey Brut Champage Champagne", with "Private Cuvée", but there's nothing so classy as a date.

What is this stuff?

I'll drink it.
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 01:30 pm (UTC)
It's dry, a blend (but good with it)

Off t'internet:
Cuvée (1) French word for "vat". (2) French refer to a wine as Cuvée if it is a specific blend, typically derived from different varietals/vintages. These wines are thought of as high quality and are most often, not always, a sparkling wine.

Certainly not something to pour away.

Cheap stuff - you can get it for 15 quid a bottle. Don't expect miracles.

The acid test is "would [livejournal.com profile] moral_vacuum or [livejournal.com profile] mmcpoland drink it sober?" ;)
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 01:33 pm (UTC)
of course similar names may be on good and bad champagnes :p
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 01:38 pm (UTC)
[grin] How would anyone ever know?
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 01:48 pm (UTC)
Dur: open a bottle and see!
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 01:50 pm (UTC)
Yes, but you'd need to find D or M sober for that test ... [grin]

And no point my drinking it - I'd just go "Yep, it's champagne. Very nice. Can I have some mead now, please please please?"
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 01:50 pm (UTC)
Brut = dry.

Private Cuvee = expensive.
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 01:56 pm (UTC)
Of course expense is relative.

Does it say "Private cuvée" or "Prestige cuvée"? The latter is the expensive one, generally it means the best bottles from a producer. The former is probably cheap shit ripping off the term of the latter without legal infringement.

i'll help ya! :) tell office it's shite and you'll dispose of it *giggle*

and we'll have to have some mead on had afterwards incase it's shit ;)

xx

[grin] It's the former ...
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 02:01 pm (UTC)
but if it says champagne then it is champagne

That is completely wrong in so many ways!

But also absolutely right, in a legal sense.
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 02:01 pm (UTC)
PS - it doesn't help scanning over the name and I see scarcely Brut Champagne - that's quite a different thing *g*

BTW - if you ever have the chance, avoid Indian 'Champagne'

1. Fizzy bubbles make world sooo niicsh!

2. The teeny tiny bottles are best because you can drink them all to yourself with a little black straw and still look glam... that never seems to work with normal size bottles.

You now have my entire knowledge on the subject of Champagne.
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 02:04 pm (UTC)
[snork] There's slightly more than I can sneak out, unfortunately - it's not just the one bottle ...
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 02:05 pm (UTC)
[grin] Probably doesn't help that I pointed out it could be "Sarky Champagne" ...
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 02:06 pm (UTC)
Valuable additions to the world of erudition, nonetheless!

that never seems to work with normal size bottles
Yeah - you need a longer straw!
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 02:11 pm (UTC)
Well, if it says "champage" [sic] on the label, I suspect it's a Bulgarian knock-off or something. ;)
Thursday, May 10th, 2007 02:12 pm (UTC)
It doesn't necessarily mean it's shit though. The producer and the year would be helpful.

For example the 1964 Krug Private Cuvee is excellent. Compared with the 1962... which is, relatively speaking, flat piss.

This is my professional field, so I can help. Tell me exactly what it says on the label. At a guess from what you've said it might well be Justerini's private blend, so not bad and perfectly drinkable, especially if one wants to make Champagne cocktails.

BTW, most of the Champagne produced is non vintage, as blending of wines is how the houses maintain their respective styles, so the lack of a date is not really relevant.

If they don't want it I can find a use.

IMPORTANT TESTING DETAILS:
I have tried it with a) longer straws & b) drunkenly hastily engineered 'pipes' of shorter straws - however the effect is always more trailer trash than glamourous chic - however expensive the bubbly.

The 20cl bottle rule!
Especially Moet & Chandon or Veuve Cliquot

And that's the kind of helpful information which is lacking ...
