Another one from the same evening as yesterday's image - a sunset taken from London Bridge - again, the camera was stabilised(ish) on the railing of the pavement.

Once again - nice composition. Obviously if you were brave enough to dash across London Bridge traffic to take the photo from the opposite side, you'd have got a bit of river in rather than railings and wall.

One day I'll write a reply without constructive criticism. It's not as if I'm a particularly good photographer after all!

Constructive criticism is welcomed! [grin]

Unfortunately there are railings down both pavements all the way across the bridge to prevent that, but the next time that the sunset looks nice I think I will cross over and take a walk down the other side of the bridge ...

In that case, I think either your camera, resizing or both are making the photos fuzzy. Are the full size ones clear and correctly focussed? I hear you're quite the Gimp Master, so if it is the resizing, perhaps a wee fiddle (no, I'm not making any puns here, honest!) might clear it up? Or saving it as something that doesn't compress as badly a .jpg?

Also, there's no harm in cropping (unless you're a wannabe Bresson?), I quite liked the photo yesterday, but a slight crop would have improved it. Perhaps playing with the hue level on some, too.

I think a lot of the fuzziness is the compression done by Fotopic.net - it looks very like the JPEG compression causing the artefacts.
There's a certain graininess to a lot of [livejournal.com profile] d_floorlandmine's photos caused by too high an ISO setting, but he's hindered by taking photos in poor light with a camera with a smallish lens, so not a huge amount can be done about that without excessively long exposures.

I'm going to do some comparison this evening - and then some checking of settings, and possibly a rude email ...

I'm usually a lazy bugger and just post the image straight from the camera (allowing for a resize). But yes, I think I might start taking more care over the cropping and levels with them.

Fotopic only saves images as .jpg, so I upload them in that format so that they don't apply additional compression. I hope. The full ones are clear and correctly focussed (otherwise I tend to ditch them at that stage). I'll compare what I've got on my computer at home with the online versions, though.

I wouldn't describe myself as a master of the GIMP, though ...

Love the picture, and I actually think that the lines in the road and the railings add to the composition, adding contrast to the skyline behind.

Ooh, thanks!
