Next to the entrance to Altab Ali Park in E1, there is this. As Altab Ali Park was the site of the original "White Chapel", of which the last example was badly damaged during WWII and then pulled down, although the former outline of the walls is still marked in the grass by a series of stone slabs, I suspect that may have lent some of its stonework to this structure.

There's a couple of tombstones and memorials left in the Park, too - if the weather stays bright today, I might pop out at lunchtime and take some more photos. There's also a piece of more modern sculpture, which is apparently a copy of a "Martyrs Memorial" elsewhere (Bangladesh, I think), and a modern decorative arch set onto the stone footings of the original arch into the churchyard, by way of a memorial for Altab Ali, who was the victim of a racist attack.

I sat in that park reading the free papers whilst waiting for d_floorlandmine to finish work once. It's quite pleasant - well, apart from the traffic noise, discarded needles and litter. I suppose it's pleasant for E1 though :)

They have made a bit of an effort to clean it up - there are new benches (metal ones designed to catch keychains), the path has letters inset into it, spelling out a line of poetry and there's now some heavy-duty play equipment (which provides handy seating the summer for students and workers having their lunch). There's still the rough-sleeper group sat on the wall, though.
