[DJing/Setlist] VVvSS present Hammer House of Hedonism, Electrowerkz, Sat 3rd Aug 2013

Last night Victorian Vampyres vs Steampunk Slayers put on another night at Electrowerkz - this time 'Hammer House of Hedonism', featuring cabaret stints from Darren Demondaz and Nigel Osner, live music from AlterRed, Gladstone and The Mysterious Freakshow and DJ sets from Darren, Scott McMahon and me.

I covered the opening set (as people were starting to show up), the first interval (between Nigel and AlterRed), the third interval (Gladstone to The Mysterious Freakshow) and then the final DJ set. The last set was slightly random as for much of it the room was virtually empty (the room, not just the dancefloor) - people had headed down for the fine weather, nicotine and conversation, and the free gig next door at Slimelight, and those who'd not paid for our bands earlier weren't allowed up to hear our DJs - which at least meant that I got to play a random selection of tunes that I fancied hearing over the big PA, targeted at the couple of people around, and if anyone wandered in and started dancing to what was playing (which happened several times), I switched to that as a genre.

Also had the personal win of a member of venue staff asking "What was that track you played straight after that band?" (Brunel by The Men That Will Not Be Blamed For Nothing) - followed by them handing me their smartphone so I could note it down for them. I like it when people like being introduced to new music.

[DJing/Setlist] Living On Video, Electrowerkz, Sat 23rd Mar 2013

This weekend's Living On Video was hit by a nasty attack of weather - the band, Future|Perfect were stuck in Wales by the snow, so in the end it was just DJs. Paul was help up by work, trains and weather too, so we swapped sets, moving me to set 2 from 3. Unfortunately, thanks to the miserable weather, turnout at that point in the evening was pretty low (verging on minimal). Still, it was definitely good to hear these tunes through a serious sound system - just means that I want to do another industrial night/set at some point in the not too distant ...

Theme this time was Electronica and Early Industrial (1978-1998), so I left the 80s cheese box at home this time, and played a crunchy set instead.

[DJing/Setlist] Living On Video, Electrowerkz, Sat 23rd Feb 2013

Last weekend Living On Video took over the top floor at Electrowerkz again. Last time we had steampunk, this time we had post-punk, with Hot Gothic, Luxury Stranger and Partly Faithful all playing live. With three live bands and two guest DJs (Rob Cowlin from Terminal Gods and Jonny Terminates Here), the DJ booth saw some pretty rapid handovers and short sets ...

Living On Video's musical theme is "dark 80s", but a rather looser definition of 80s than is applied for Whitby - as a result, tracks from around the 80s, or modern tracks that sound 80s are also allowed (Editors, I'm looking directly at you, there's no use hiding).

Jonny's set is here.

The Next One ...
The next Living On Video event will be Reproduction, again at Electrowerkz, on Sat March 23rd. 8pm 'til 3am (possibly 4 if we keep the floor moving and drinking), £7 on the door, a live set from Futureperfect, and we're widening the genre box to include, and I quote "old school industrial anthems and dark electronic classics from 1978 - 1998" ... which means I'm already picking some crunchy favourites which may replace the punk numbers in my set ...
(For those of you on FaceBook, the event page is here.)

[DJing/Setlist] Living On Video, Elixir (Euston), Fri 31st Aug 2012

The third night of the Living On Video 'dark 80s' night. This time the band was Deathline, a two-piece somewhat reminiscent of Jesus And Mary Chain as musical genre. Technical issues led to a slightly late start, but here's what I played.

[DJing/Setlist] Living On Video, Elixir, Sat 5th May 2012

Another weekend, another 80s night ... [grin] This was a free club night for Emma Darkmorte's birthday, featuring a number of DJs (Kirlian, Scott, Demondaz and me) and a set from the Thought Criminals. 134 people through the door, and it looks like it might happen again sometime ...

(Second set appears to have gone a little 'metal' - I blame the people who were encouraging me (and the one who requested Def Leppard). Or should that be credit?)
