My mum's cousin has lived with that for a good 15 years now, and isn't really any different, apart from the loss of confidence (she hid for a long time) and the shaking hands. She still does a million crafts, and works part-time (she's a librarian) and is just as eccentric as ever. (And I owe her a letter). So, I think he's right to remain optimistic. He's in a line of work where he might be slowed down a bit, but he shouldn't be stopped from writing!
