Well, that's one reason why Metallica's latest album sounded so drab. Have a look at the clipping shown by the graphs on this link (from September, but I'd not followed to it before). Far far too much compression. Ouch. Maybe with a re-mixing, it might sound less average. Although I (obviously) think that they should have let Mr Trujillo put his own bass approach to work ...

I suspect that "a bit stupid" could be a contender for "Great Understatements". [sigh]

There was a bunch of talk on a variety of forums about how the Guitar Hero mix of the album was significantly better because it was a lot less clipped, including comments from the sound engineer to that effect.

I thought it was my generally awesome headphones not handling the Awesome Bass Phatness(tm), but it seems that was not the case.

The music industry has been heading this way for years. The problem is that most of the public don't notice the compression unless it's ridiculous, and a lot of recent music doesn't have a great dynamic range anyway. So people have developed a louder=better attitude at the expense of the dynamics, and equipment manufacturers (at the cheaper end of the market) follow suit. Why make a hi-fi that can handle a large dynamic range if none of the music has it...
