[Grin] Croydon is the devil's work ...

Or at least, so claimed Friday/Saturday's Now Show, currently available on demand. About five minutes and a half minutes in, if you only want to catch that official confirmation.

Together with a bit of amusement on the subject of the wisdom of siting the Crystal Palace near Croydon ... a building built out of large, fragile, expensive panes of glass ...

UPDATE: The Now Show also featured a brilliant Mitch Benn tribute to John Peel called "A Minute's Noise" - it's excellent, and really needs to exist as an Mp3.

Now I'll have you know I've spent many happy hours in Croydon with my SE London posse before now. Mind you, I was drunk. Staggeringly so. And I was living in Coventry in term-time. And I gave it up when I discovered Crystal Palace was a much pleasanter place to become staggeringly drunk in.

Having spent several formative years there, and now owning a flat there, I can vouch for Croydon meeting most of people's expectations ... [grin]

A minute's silence couldn't show him how we feel - let's have a minute's noise for Peel.

I feel obliged to point out that he won't be able to appreciate a minute's noise either, being dead and all that. But he'd probably have been amused in a slightly wry fashion by it if he hadn't popped his clogs.

Have to admit to only hearing it as an "on demand" download at work, as I was busy Friday night and Saturday daytime ...

ah,

I was in a car driving over a very windy road in the rain trying to avoid traffic jams on the M6.

It's the first time I'd ever managed to catch it, and was muchly impressed - and did indeed think of you and Croyden!

Went to a couple of recordings of it last year, thanks to [livejournal.com profile] gothstevek and others. And the school in Croydon to which Steve Punt went was mine - apparently a few years before me. So there -almost a claim to fame ...
