According to this article by the smug IT security company, "In mid-February Sophos will announce significant product upgrades that incorporate a number of benefits, including advanced technologies which enhance the proactive interception of new viruses and emerging spam campaigns."

For some reason, potentially to do with recent experience of their products, this fails to fill me with unbounded enthusiasm. Hopefully the benefits will include working in concert with other products they produce. Apparently sales of PureMessage in the UK alone have increased 100-fold since April 2004. Given that it's what I've been whinging about, I'm not certain why ...

Probably because, like you and I, the people buying Sophos products would expect them to work together. By the time they realise that they don't together in anything other than the most rudimentary fashion, Sophos already have the all important Sales figure increase. You'll notice how the returns/cancelled sales figures haven't been published. Customer testimonials seem pretty thin on the ground too.

Sounds about right and matches my personal experience pretty exactly.

I bet the 'upgrades' won't be free though. You have to pay extra if you want a system that actualy works.
