Ok, the use of the word "girth" was mostly because it makes [livejournal.com profile] valkyriekaren giggle. However, having decided to go to my MSc graduation, the next step is ordering the robes - which means knowing my diameter - chest measurement and head circumference.

[livejournal.com profile] valkyriekaren is going to measure them both tonight, but in the meantime, how big do you think I am, baby?

[Poll #926350]

Nearest guess might get a drink or something. Possibly.

I've got a photo of you measuring your head for your degree at York. If I zoom in enough I might be able to read the tape measure :)

Sneaky!

I shall decline to answer, on the grounds of insider knowledge.
Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 01:49 pm (UTC)
Have you measured him before?
Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 01:51 pm (UTC)
I think I did, yes. I can't remember why now though. I didn't measure his head but as I know his neck meaurement I could make an educated guess. But that's cheating I suspect.

I think it was to check the size needed for the Portable Ego tshirt ...
Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 01:54 pm (UTC)
Oh, yes, it probably was. I'm sure there was another reason as well though. Hmm. *thinks*

Not sure how chest measurements follow from neck measurements - I suspect it may be rather an inexact science.

Did you know that the supposed 'ideal formula' for a Victorian woman's figure was for the neck to be twice the circumference of the wrist, and the waist twice the circumference of the neck?

Another measure of eprfection was the length of the nose from top of the bridge to the base of the septum line) should correspond to the width of the mouth, the length of the ears, and the distance between the corner of the eye and the ear.

Load of old rubbish...

Lawks.

Inside-is-leg, surely? Unless, you know, your cow-orker was right with those sumo comments.

I remember when I was being measured for my graduation gown, they wanted to know what I was across the shoulders and how tall I was. Nothing about my chest! (Which was somewhat smaller then...)
Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 02:03 pm (UTC)
Well, they might have had some problems with excess bosom [grin]. Actually, if it's less than a certain size, then it's fine, but if it's more than that threshold, they need to know to make sure the robes are big enough. Shoulder width isn't asked on this form, though.

I should also point out that I don't understand inches beyond about 12.

You haven't given an option for cup size on the chest...
Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 04:17 pm (UTC)
True, but not a big enough range of plausible options to make it interesting. [grin] Also, it's not something that's actually needed to book academic robes ...

yet...

Maybe one day in the cyber-future they'll be skin tight PVC. You'll need that foam shower cubical thing from StreetHawk to do the measuring...

Spray-on academic gowns!

When did [livejournal.com profile] childeric start designing academic wear?

I think I might have the StreetHawk theme somewhere ...

Cup? Not soup bowl?
Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 05:27 pm (UTC)
Girth is one of those words, like 'vestibule' that has almost lost any meaning other than a genital one. ;)
Tuesday, February 13th, 2007 05:28 pm (UTC)
I agree about girth, but for me a 'vestibule' is still an architectural feature ...

Say it in a Peter Cook voice.

See? It's RUDE.

Anything said in a Peter Cook voice sounds rude ...

Pure guess.

I used to be really good at this kind of thing. at, ooh, 18 I could tell a man's jean size by putting my arm round his waist. Not intensely have a feel, just drape casually; like you'd stand as a couple. it was a great pick up skill ;-)
Wednesday, February 14th, 2007 09:57 am (UTC)
That's a pretty impressive skill! I had mates who could reliably estimate bra size simply by looking at someone's clothed figure - both cup and back measurements. It only got them slapped some of the time ... [grin]
