dancefloorlandmine: DJing at B-Movie Nov 04 (DJ)
Monday, August 31st, 2015 03:26 pm
"Hits and Myths", the penultimate Shenanigans. A mix of '80s and '90s, a dash of industrial/EBM and a couple of mashups - and that's how to put together one of my Shenanigans sets...

Setlist )

(From my point of view as a DJ, I appreciate it when someone comes to ask what song I'm playing - it's how I picked up quite a bit of music myself over the years.)

And, don't forget, the last Shenanigans club night is Saturday 24th October ...

"It Came From The Internet" ... featuring a range of inspired costumes, including Nyancat and a number of captions and a rather fine guest DJ slot from Marc Burrows. And a certain effort not to make the whole set some kind of polemic.

The first Shenanigans of 2015. "These Are Not The Cylons You're Looking For" - a number of blondes in red dresses, a number of Colonial Viper pilots, and a profusion of assorted other aliens, Starfleet crew, and robots.

Also, very flattered to be selected to be the first DJ to play "Slimelight 2000" by The Memepunks.

Shenanigans: You Must Not Read From The Book. Though, judging by the glowing runes on some people's skin, that was an instruction that was completely disregarded. Oh well. Souls are optional accessories. Some fine costumes, too.

The first Shenanigans of 2014, at the start of May, was the "Unseelie Carnival". Again upstairs at Canal 125, with an extra hour of DJing at the start, and a crowd who seemed willing to trust the DJs and keep dancing even if they weren't familiar with the track - always appreciated!

New Years Eve with the Shenanigans crowd at Canal 125 for Shenanigans: Voodoo Swamp Fever, with the B-Movie Sound System carrying us over the midnight hour. The night was opened by DJ Ruth, then dBSurfeit and Hamst0r before the B-Movie Sound System. Next set for me, then Psyche to close the night. There was bunting, there were balloons, and there were a bunch of people. Pretty much what's needed for NYE.

And here's what I played ...

This one was "The Non-Euclidean Nightmare", so the costumes featured more tentacles and runes than a busy sushi restaurant. On top of that, we had an album preview from CTRL-ALT-DEL, performing from inside a cage at the end of the ground floor. All in all, a pretty busy night - added to the fact that we opened an hour earlier than usual, so had eleven DJs across the two floors. Not yet sure of the total charity take, but pretty much everyone seemed to be having a good time, even the terrified-looking glowing mini shoggoths. (Also, having the band meant running through a rather larger PA rig than usual.)

One again I was on the final slot, following a eclectic and swing/80s set (Stray Cats, Zoot Suit Riot, Thriller among others) from DJ SpunkyLobster. And here's what I played - my orginal planned set lasted until the end of the first track, for a number of reasons, including a CD that wouldn't load in the player and a bar clock that was about three minutes faster than mine ...

The next Shenanigans will be on New Year's Eve, and next weekend I'll be at the Whitby 80s Night at The Shambles on Sunday.

With the title “One Of Our Dinosaurs Is Missing”, there was really only one way the theme to Saturday's Shenanigans club could go. Admittedly, there were considerably fewer cavemen and women than expected, but we did have a dinosaur on the door for a while. Although we only had the top two floors, it worked pretty well – the sofas had all been moved down to the middle floor, so there was a decent-sized dancefloor, and repeater speakers on the floor with the seating meant that people could tell what was playing upstairs (and make the traditional dash for the stairway during the opening bars). We even had an unexpected barman at the upstairs bar, which saved on stair congestion.

A couple of early technical hitches may have been down to iffy CD burns and temperamental decks, but everything settled down later, though the PA could still have done with a few more Watts, resulting in a certain amount of mixer-tweaking to try to pull as much out of it as possible.

I played the final 1am-2am set, following Judder's Lee Chaos, starting off thematic, and then heading off to some of the edges of my music collection.

”0100-0200” )

Babylon Is Burning was a surprise late addition to the end of the set due to a discrepancy between the barman's watch and the clock I was running off requiring a rapidly-grabbed short track.

The next Shenanigans will be Shenanigans: The Non-Euclidean Nightmare on October 26th at Canal 125, when we will have an album launch party for CTRL+ALT+DEL, and will be opening at 8pm rather than 9pm.

(Also, I'll be DJing at the Memepunks double-set gig on 28th September at Rattlesnake of Angel.)

With most of the other DJs going the electronic or mashup set routes, I decided to go 'eclectic' on the end-of-night set on the ground floor - maybe a touch more so than usual, but it seemed to do the job, with a couple of previously untried tracks working out too ...

My first time DJing at Canal 125 (and Shenanigans' second visit to what is now the new home). Nine DJs over ten hours on both dancefloors. All rounded off by a storming two-hour set from Sexbat on the top floor, resulting in a certain number of flashbacks to the days of B-Movie. As one friend notably said "Did we just spend tonight in a bit of 2007 that we missed the first time around?"

I danced to most of Sal's set, some of Ara's, most of Zeke's, then did an hour myself, before dancing to almost all of Sexbat's. I am now starting to ache in places that haven't ached in a while. I shall pay for this evening in, and for, a while.

Meanwhile, here's what I played ...
