[News] Not a good start to the year.

Benazir Bhutto killed by suicide bomber.

Please find your own handbasket, this one's mine.

Yeah, I saw that earlier today. :-/

Should be interesting to see how this all plays out, to put it mildly. I'm wondering how long some Muslims will approve of suicide bombings when other Muslims are the targets.

On this side of the pond, there are actually a lot who don't approve of them, no matter who's the target.

Those who do approve of the use of suicide bombings against "the enemies of Islam" will probably be able to explain why any targets are in fact the enemies of their flavour of Islam.

I imagine there are a number of them here too, but they never speak up. It's rather odd.

theres quite a lot who speak out and condemn it over here, including leaders, Imams and Islamic Academics who are more than happy to point out that the killings of innocents are against the teachings. However that doesn't make particually good press so they dont get the publicity of the vocal radical minority.

This may very well be a large part of the problem.

Muslims have been the target of suicide bombings for quite some time now - in Iraq, to take an obvious example. What difference are you seeing in this case?

You are correct. Notice that I wrote "some Muslims" in my original statement, which designates that there is a portion of the Muslim population that is already enraged and does not approve.

Mainly that it's an assassination of a high profile politician. It's pretty blunt to say that these sort of situations garner more attention, but it's the truth.

Christ. I'm kind of amazed you're the only person on my flist to have linked to this.

I spotted it about the same time as [livejournal.com profile] spikeylady did, I think; certainly she and I posted about it within minutes of each other. I'm somewhat amazed more people aren't posting about this though. I can only assume a lot of people just aren't paying attention to the news at the moment and/or are away from their computers, due to the time of year.

I remember when the tsunami hit three years back, I didn't find out until a week later when I was on my way back to London, as I hadn't been near a computer, TV or newspaper until I reached the train station.

I'd rather consider it a negative end to the year, than a bad start to the new one.

That said, I'd rather not have to consider it at all, as it's a sad loss for all.
