Well, the sofa delivery has been postponed to the weekend, so I will have to wait for recumbent goodness. On the plus side, have now ordered my cable installation, and they will be coming around a week on Wednesday to install it - which means that I will have a landline, several TV channels (some of which I'll watch), and 512k broadband. Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] lproven for getting the computer up and running 1.

Bizarre demonstration of pseudo-competence - one of our work pcs suddenly blue-screened, with no incentive. Attempts to reboot from CD revealed that it appeared to have lost the HDD - which caused much panic around the relevant desk, as it the machine with the FORMIC scanner and external drive, and is the only one with a SCSI port and FORMIC software. Having prepared them for the worst (waiting a week until my manager returns and we can order a replacement machine of the appropriate spec), I decided to plunge in regardless. Took the side off, unplugged the HDD, reseated the plugs ... and presto. It worked, impressing the staff member (and restarting her breathing) almost as much as it impressed me. Still not sure why, though ... although as I turned to walk away, I heard a gentle [clonk] noise as she turned her chair, and kicked the casing. The tower has since been moved from foot radius ...

In other news, am somewhat busy this week, so may not be able to catch up on LJ - if there's something I really, really, need to know, that was posted over the weekend, please put a [point] to it in the comments. Many thanks.

1 Another curry/chinese/kebab/pint may be provided if you fancy coming around to install the firewall at any point, sir ...

Many years ago, when the world was younger, Queen Victoria ruled over the Empire, and a pound was worth a pound, it was hinted to me by my then-beloved (a woman with fantastic tits and a near-insatiable appetite for Pringles and shagging) that there could be a reassessment of our conjugal bits and bobs if I didn't buy a new sofa. Inspired by this, and the Men Behaving Badly episode in which Gary is forced to abandon his sofa, I sallied forth into York, credit card in hand, a-sofa hunting to go.

Thinking that the obvious thing to do was troll over to Habitat, since they had sofas in the window, I thought I'd soon complete the transaction and be seated upon a new sofa by the time the sun went down.

Point at sofa in shop. Tell assistant I like it and I'd like one delivering on Saturday, not too early, as anyone disturbing me before the end of Loose Ends is likely to incur my wrath. (Well, ok, I didn't mention Loose Ends). Assistant goes and plays with computer. Comes back long-faced and suggests that I can't have said sofa for five weeks. I point out that
five weeks at a steady 30mph gets you about 25000 miles, or approximately the circumference of the earth, and take my custom elsewhere after buying
some rather jolly plates. I also point out that you have the very one at which I'm pointing, there in the shop, and that you can't make dubious claims about the supply chain and since it's slightly used, tell you what, give me free delivery and knock fifty quid off that very sofa and we'll all be happy.

No dice.

Pop into dodgy family-run furniture shop on the Saturday morning and spot something that'll do the job very nicely. (Colour not wonderful, but covers are
detachable). "When do you want it?" "Monday lunchtime OK for you?" "Yep, we'll give you a ring about half an hour before we set off to deliver it".

Support small businesses, I say!

Second that with knobs on re: beds.

Which sofa was that? Was that the sofa that made you effectively sit on the floor and lose all your loose change into (thus funding your and Steer's pie eating for another day?) or the one that smelt funny. or was that the same sofa? Didn't things 'happen' on that sofa? More importantly, was that the sofa that I had to shift from one house to another in the back of the rusty old blue SU transit?

The sofa that had to be replaced was the prolapsed one, yes. It had been acquired from a vigorously practising but recently-out homosexual of my acquaintance and had probably seen its share of ugly-bumping in the past...

And yes, it was the horrid one you ferried from Broadway in the SU bus.

The sofa I bought to replace it is nice, and yellow. (and covered in a terracotta-coloured throw).

(for the benefit of [livejournal.com profile] steer and [livejournal.com profile] childeric, it was the sofa I brought that sat in the bay-window at Broadway. ;P

Aha - so not the one on which I was employed as a temporary seat cushion ...

Actually, they're a pretty small business, and they did offer to deliver on Wednesday or Friday instead of the Thursday they couldn't do, but I decided I wasn't going to kill a random day of holiday on a sofa after all.

Why did I read that first sentence as '...so I will have to wait for a recumbent goddess'?

Ah, yes, because it was you! ;-p

;-b

And now you've got me thinking of recumbent goddesses ... you b'stard! [grin]

Getting a good sofa makes all the difference to a good house. I firmly believe the sofa is the central point of any flat/apartment/house/hovel/bedsit (delete as appropriate) and should be treated as such, ie have lots of people sitting on it at any one time in order to make it feel loved.

[grin] Oh, indeed - and should it turn out that I definitely have the space, I am contemplating getting a second one, to match, to go under the front window - which will thus allow me to seat six people in something approaching comfort (and incidentally, accomodate an average size gaming group :-)

Now this is starting to sound like a serious plan, mate.
Thursday, January 22nd, 2004 10:52 am (UTC)
How did I know you'd say that? [grin]

Welcome!

And BTW, not everyone has such an unhealthy obsession with sofas. You can even borrow one of mine if you're that bothered... :¬)
Wednesday, January 21st, 2004 02:08 am (UTC)
[grin] Not so much a sofa obsession as a desire to have a front room that looks more like a real front room ... and also the ability to seat more than 1.5 people in comfort [grin]
Wednesday, January 21st, 2004 05:21 am (UTC)
Hmph. Beanbags and cushions, it's all anyone at my 1st housewarming got... :¬)
Thursday, January 22nd, 2004 10:56 am (UTC)
[grin] And with the addition of folding chairs, all anyone got at mine, too - but not quite how I'd prefer to live, given the option ... [grin]

I think it was [livejournal.com profile] reverendjim and Meike (who you met t'other Sunday) that brought an inflatable armchair to mine. That was cool.

1.5 people in comfort? How do you manage that? Currently it's one person trying not too move too much on the beanbag because it sounds wierd and makes one slightly seasick and one person on a flattened cushion....

Looking forward to seeing new sofa-age!
