Yesterday I demonstrated my complete control of meteorology, as a rather dramatic storm with full sound effects (and added hailstones) began as I was considering the plans for the evening, which would have necessitated loitering on the street waiting for at least one person. I managed to acquire a spare brolly from the rack at work, which sheltered me until I could get to the newsagents to buy one for myself. At which point the rain stopped. However, the one from work was just the right length for "umbrella poncing", although I resisted the urge to demonstrate my inability to tapdance. Collected Al (WINOLJ) from the wrong tube exit (by way of a lengthy sequence of contacts - his mobile battery was flat, and he couldn't remember my number, so he landlined a mate in York, who then texted me with his location. Reminiscent of the US in Grenada). Then around the corner to collect [livejournal.com profile] mr_prickle from his sheltered location at a street corner, and off to the restaurant (Bengal Village) to await [livejournal.com profile] childeric, who had been delayed by sodden tubes. Seemed like good curries all around (my Prawn Puree and Chicken Kashmir were good), even if when it came to the hot towels and complimentary mints one of our party appeared to be invisible to the staff. [livejournal.com profile] childeric's phone spent much time attempting to be the centre of attention, and at the end of the meal he rushed off to attend to his fans, leaving the rest of us feeling slightly unwanted.

Sample conversation from the evening:
[livejournal.com profile] childeric: I don't understand why the Tube floods. After all, it's underground ... Oh.
Al (WINOLJ): And remember it's basically a series of pipes.
[livejournal.com profile] childeric (rallying): Yeah, so it could be watertight.
[livejournal.com profile] d_floorlandmine: Erm ... you'd still need to be able to get in and out.

(This one quoted because I can't remember all of [livejournal.com profile] mr_prickle's comments about sheep, and they weren't suitable for public consumption anyway (the comments, not the sheep, if you see what I mean?))

Wish I could have made it! However was stuck watching an odd Portguese play. Kinda interesting if only to tell me what not to do as a director!

Just as if three different directors had directed the three couples in the play and then thrown them on stage. Interesting but like watching three sets of people in different bubbles, never really breaking out of their own spheres. Which might have been the intention! I prefer a more naturalistic approach. Definately watchable though and some great humourous moments - plus I disagree with the Time Out review who talked about misogyny in the play - I think it was there as an example of poor behaviour rather than being uncritical of misogynistic attitudes.

Interesting approach. Might have been a good depiction of the isolation of modern society - or an accident due to each couple managing their own direction to an extent ... [grin]

I shall be teasing [livejournal.com profile] childeric about this when next I see him, you can be sure!

Hmm. I think my next "Underground 101" post on [livejournal.com profile] undergroundgoth will be about the floodgate system.

[grin] It did lead to discussion of the possibility of air locks - and whether the lift-accessed stations would count ...

umbrella poncing
I sometimes find myself doing bits of the t'ai chi sword form with my umbrella. Or balancing it on my toe. Never done the Fred Astaire thing, though.

[livejournal.com profile] childeric has a wonderful ability to open mouth and change foot! Especially if alcohol has been involved! ;-)

This was only just after the bottle of Cobra had been opened. Although there was an interesting explanation of the effect of extreme hunger on his brain at Whitby ...
Wednesday, April 28th, 2004 04:04 am (UTC)
Hmm... maybe that's it then. He needs constant feeding to keep his brain in good working order and maybe that's why he's so slim! ;-)
Wednesday, April 28th, 2004 04:24 am (UTC)
Slim? He complains that he's getting fat when he hits a 32" waist! Mutter Mutter. That's about ten years ago for me!
Wednesday, April 28th, 2004 04:32 am (UTC)
32" waist? Surely not!?! I'd have him down as 30" at the most!
Wednesday, April 28th, 2004 05:41 am (UTC)
[grin] Hence the panic visible if he approaches 32" ...
Wednesday, April 28th, 2004 06:46 am (UTC)
*sigh!* I used to be a 30" waist too. :-(
Wednesday, April 28th, 2004 07:44 am (UTC)
Careful sirrah ... [grin]
Wednesday, April 28th, 2004 07:49 am (UTC)
It's the love of a good woman (and the meals out together) that's done it. ;-)

Thank you so much for the CD, it's lovely!!!!

Oh, and sorry I couldn't make last night, I was busy getting drenched without a coat.
Wednesday, April 28th, 2004 05:14 am (UTC)
Glad you liked - wasn't sure whether it would vanish in the unpredictable post around here!

And I narrowly avoided drenching - with only a t-shirt and jeans ... today I have the Long Black Coat ...

d_floorlandmine: Erm ... you'd still need to be able to get in and out.

Yes, although technically speaking this is sometimes rather difficult, when it comes to the London Underground! ;)
