A while back I discovered that dimmable LED bulbs were now an acquirable thing (previous LED bulbs having been sternly marked that they were not suitable for use with dimmer switches). So I gleefully skipped to the relevatn part of Wilko's website (I was there to order a half-price fleecy blanket at the time, admitteldy), and ordered one to go in the living-room uplighter. (The ceiling fitting is now mostly used when I'm looking for something and need more illumination.)

I soon discovered that said dimmable LED bulb, while it did indeed dim and brighten as the slider was moved, only came on partway through the range, and would occasionally buzz and often flicker annoyingly. A bit of research has since found that, while 'dimmable LED' bulbs are indeed dimmable, they are designed to work with LED-compatible dimmer switches, which means that they may not be a suitable direct replacement for older fittings. Which is somewhat irking. Another lesson learned.

Back to the halogen bulb in the uplighter, then.

You know you own a restful oasis of calm when not one, but two foxes decide that it is a suitable place for their regular nap in the sun. According to [livejournal.com profile] valkyriekaren she sees them quite regularly when she is at mine, but today was the first time that I saw them both while having my camera to hand. Unfortunately, they manage to sequester themselves quite neatly away from easy view from my flat's windows, but I got some shots. Also unfortunately, my long zoom is getting a bit soft on the focus at full zoom (it's the old Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 Mk I ... second-hand when I bought it seventeen years ago), and the landing window from which I took some of the shots didn't help (it's technically part of the other flat's 'territory' in the house, and definitely hasn't been cleaned in five years, probably quite a few more!).

But for those who'd like to see them, the photos are here.

And, as ever, a couple of samples behind the cut ... )

Shock and wonder - the cistern for my loo requires a non-standard flush handle. Neither of the two local 'sell-everything' hardware shops stock one which would work, and neither does the bathroom shop within walking distance - although he suggested that it might need a handle from the specific manufacturer.

Of course, the cistern states "British Made", but not the manufacturer. The bowl? Completely blank. It's of a set with the basin and bath ... but they also don't say. [sigh]

In the meantime, I might be able to bodge a stand-in, using the remaining ¾ of the broken shaft.

And so the search begins.

[sigh]

This post brought to you by the "pointless minutiae" school of LJ posting.

EDIT: Have achieved a bodge solution, so it now works again, although I may be looking for a replacement in a bigger shop for when it fails again.

This morning I demonstrated l33t domestic god skills (for a very minor level of demi-deity) and changed some fuse wire in my fusebox. Go me. The electrical sockets now work again (which is how I am online). Also, I'm going to see whether my local hardware shop sells MCBs (circuit breakers) which I can replace the wire cartridges with. [sigh] Given that he appears to stock almost everything, the answer is "probably".

However, can anyone in the Croydon area recommend a decent electrician? - while changing the fuse, I noticed that one of the other cartridge holders needs replacing, and I'm not sure that "messing with the fusebox" constitutes a DIY-level task.
