dancefloorlandmine: DJing at B-Movie Nov 04 (DJ)
Tuesday, May 26th, 2020 02:36 am
On Sunday I was considering re-creating another set from a past event, but as the news started to reveal the tale of Dominic's Great Road Trip, I started working out a different setlist, and I recorded it on Monday afternoon (after watching a press conference taking place in a rose garden).

hearthis.at/simon-landmine-gh/dj-landmine-20200525/

Be warned, some of the tracks contain Anglo-Saxon words in the titles, let alone the lyrics, and it starts pretty strong from the opening track, so probably not suitable for listening in the company of young children.

(That chorus in the first track is "Can't hear ya 'cause your mouth's full o' ...", in case you're wondering.)

(Other sets are also available via tinyurl.com/djLandmine.)

If anyone is interested in what the election results would have been had we used the d'Hondt method of party-list proportional representation, [livejournal.com profile] palmersperry was a touch bored earlier.

The results he calculated are here.

EDIT: Apparently the method the BBC described as d'Hondt isn't quite the same as the d'Hondt method as described on Wikipedia - although they may actually produce the same results. So this is 'BBC d'Hondt', rather than 'Wikipedia d'Hondt'. Feel free to make your own calculations - sure someone on my friendslist has got a spreadsheet and a yen for algorithms ...

His previous post has an earlier calculation, which didn't use the national breakdowns of the more detailed calculation.

Asian men and BNP candidate Bob Bailey clash¹ in Barking.

¹ By "clash" they mean "have a punch up with the BNP candidate clearly seen trying to put the boot in".

I'm not sure that the phrase "Get on your way. There's more of us coming, and there's more of us than there are of you." is traditionally recognised as a line for democratic political canvassers ...

Although "if there are a few crazies or thugs on the streets I'm sure the police will deal with them quite quickly" is an unusual thing for Nick Griffin to say, although obviously, in his head, he's referring to everyone else, and not to his own party, who are apparently the victims of a "campaign of hatred and dehumanisation".

A party political broadcast on behalf of not-the-BNP ...

"In the upcoming elections in the UK, the far-right party the BNP are pushing for an unprecedented number of seats, and are possibly going to win some of them. They need 8% of the vote. This means that the more people that vote in the elections, the less chance the fascist BNP have of getting in.
Please make sure you are registered for the June 4th elections.
Please vote - for any party, except the BNP.
Please don't let them get in because of apathy.
Here is some information about Nick Griffin, the leader of the party - http://www.hopenothate.org.uk/the-real-bnp/Profile-of-Nick-Griffin.php

Here is some more information on the BNP - http://www.hopenothate.org.uk/the-real-bnp/

Some of you have LJ's and other blogs that are read by a lot of people. Please - it takes a few minutes only to just copy and paste this post into your own blog and make sure the message gets out. It doesn't take long to vote, and I'm not asking you to vote for any particular party that you might not have a high opinion of at the moment. Just vote for someone and stop the BNP."

Proviso - personally, I'm not that keen on the Christian Party, though - they may not be the BNP, but they've got a fairly high proportion of policies that I find unpalatable, even so.

Philip Pullman¹ wrote a piece for the Times about Britain's stealthy conversion to a police state. It would appear that Times Online has managed to break/lose/redact the link to this article.

[livejournal.com profile] christiffer noticed this and pulled it out of his cache, posting it here. [livejournal.com profile] duoinchains posted a link, and [livejournal.com profile] ephemera reposted the text of the article, and now I am doing the same, partly because I wanted a copy for myself ...

The article )

Now, wonder why that's vanished? And yes, I know it's somewhat in the manner of a polemic, although a well-written one with nice literary allusions. But it does raise what some might refer to as "a few points".

A rough transcript of Philip Pullman's keynote speech, mentioned above, is here.

¹ I am told there may be some dispute about the attribution of this to Mr Pullman.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] ephemera for picking this up ...

Firstly, farewell to the Astoria, confirmed to close on 15th January.

But, more invidious is this, "Form 696", an eight a four-page form for licensees to complete, giving all details of performers and the anticipated audience at live music events. Currently it applies in 21 London boroughs, but it could well spread.

There's a copy of the form here, for the especially curious.

On [livejournal.com profile] ephemera's post, one comment noted the 6 year retention period, the 14-day advance requirement (what happens with a late substitution - would that be illegal? and walk-on and open mic nights?), the (in)security of email as a route for personal information and the fact that it'll also hit private events in licensed premises too. I'm sure others will find more to comment on - not restricted to the "ethnic background make-up of likely audience" question. ("It's OK, officer, they're all nice white boys." ... pity it's a Skrewdriver covers band.) Unless they're talking eyeliner ...

Letter to the MP time again?

The Clown Prince of Darkness has won. Boris has just been declared Mayor.

Now we see whether he's a real buffoon, or a Claudian master of dissembling¹. Either way, I suspect it won't be good for public transport in London.

¹ Possibly. He may decide to keep hiding his light until he challenges DC for leadership of the party. But then, I'm no political commentator.

New legislation coming into force on 1st October 2007 increases the holiday rights for those working a five day week to 24 days a year. Which means that I will get another day a year, as I get 20 days and an additional three between Christmas and New Year which don't count as part of our allocation, but would probably be included.

Additionally, from April 2009, the statutory allowance will be 28 days.

Meanwhile, I'm also trying to push for an additional day per year of service. This may have something to do with the fact that I'm one of the longest-serving members of staff ...

Gordon Brown has described himself as "a conviction politician". Does that description also apply to Jeffrey Archer? [grin]

No great surprise, as Princeton University researchers show that yes, American automated voting is a cinch to compromise, with the possibility of installing the code to do so in under a minute.

Linked by [livejournal.com profile] failing_angel ...

A life-size replica of a Guantanamo Bay detainee has been placed in Disneyland by Banksy.

Image below cut, as per Failing_Angel post )

Apparently it was in place for as long as 90 minutes.

In other news, the classic Banksy image of Samuel L Jackson and John Travolta in Pulp Fiction attire, but holding bananas rather than pistols, was obliterated by taggers. So he's redone it, but this time they're holding pistols and wearing banana costumes ...
