My Eee has just decided, entirely of it's own accord, and without my even installing a patch or update, that it has a US keyboard¹. I'm running the default Xandros install, and this did happen last year (at which point I reinstalled the OS). However, the fact that it's happened again, together with the limitations of the Xandros install, have me trying to decide between two options.
  1. Find someone with a Windows XP CD, say "sod it", and install XP on the damn thing.
  2. Find someone who knows about 'real Linux' (ubuntu or similar) and install that.
I don't have an XP disk, nor do I know anything about Linux, so either option is currently a moot point. I am, however, getting frustrated with the Xandros install. It would be nice to be able to install the latest version of GIMP. (XP would also let me use the other Windows photo-shunting software I'm used to, but that's not quite as big a pull factor).

¹ In complete denial of the "Keyboard" selection on the "Personalisation" popup on the "Settings" tab, which states "English/UK", and won't even accept a change to "English/US" (I had a go, to see whether I could change it to US and then back to UK to fix it - but it wouldn't go away from so-called UK.

[livejournal.com profile] black_faery has just posted a nasty shock. She recently went to the cinema, and while there, saw the huge hoardings for The Dark Is Rising, allegedly based on Susan Cooper's amazing series.

Unlike me, she visited IMDB to find out more about it. And has now reported back on what she found.

It looks like it's been butchered - it's been updated to the modern era, some characters are now American (presumably to get the dollar involved) and they appear to have made some substantial changes to the plot*.

* Suffice to say, for those who know the books: They've cut out The Walker. That should tell you a vast chunk of what you didn't want to know.

Dear Hollywood, if you can't do a decent job of making a great book into a good film, please don't run it through the shredder in the dash for a bit of the Harry Potter-inspired cash. Now sod off.

I've not seen the Earthsea film they made a couple of years ago, for much the same reason of fear.

Yep, another cause for low muttering and frustration: Database data entry forms where the tab order hasn't been sorted out, so pressing Tab from one field, rather than moving you to the field below (or the next one in a reasonable sequence), sends you to a random location on the form, or results in something invisible receiving the focus (that's especially helpful).
