Had a query from a colleague ... how do mobile phones/devices relate to IP addresses?

I know that domestic machines will either be assigned a fixed IP by their provider, or allocated a "random" one. But how do the mobile networks handle IPs for mobiles? And does this differ for always-connected devices like Blackberry™s, as opposed to mobile phones where you can switch the web client on and off?

And bah again, I say. Looks like the AVG update on my PC has broken my Sygate firewall (it's an old Windows 2K box). Can anyone recommend any reputable free alternatives? EDIT: Alternatives to the firewall, preferably - it looks like SPF has died a death.

In the interim, I've used the Eee to download the Sygate installer again, to see if that fixes the issue, and while there, also the ZoneAlarm one (which I used on the previous PC), but can anyone suggest an alternative to those? Ta!

EDIT: Sorry, looks like I wasn't quite clear. It's the firewall that I need a replacement for, as a) I'm otherwise happy with AVG, b) SPF wouldn't run after a complete un-and-reinstall, even after I'd temporarily uninstalled AVG as a test and c) ZoneAlarm's current version won't run on 2K.

My Eee has just decided, entirely of it's own accord, and without my even installing a patch or update, that it has a US keyboard¹. I'm running the default Xandros install, and this did happen last year (at which point I reinstalled the OS). However, the fact that it's happened again, together with the limitations of the Xandros install, have me trying to decide between two options.
  1. Find someone with a Windows XP CD, say "sod it", and install XP on the damn thing.
  2. Find someone who knows about 'real Linux' (ubuntu or similar) and install that.
I don't have an XP disk, nor do I know anything about Linux, so either option is currently a moot point. I am, however, getting frustrated with the Xandros install. It would be nice to be able to install the latest version of GIMP. (XP would also let me use the other Windows photo-shunting software I'm used to, but that's not quite as big a pull factor).

¹ In complete denial of the "Keyboard" selection on the "Personalisation" popup on the "Settings" tab, which states "English/UK", and won't even accept a change to "English/US" (I had a go, to see whether I could change it to US and then back to UK to fix it - but it wouldn't go away from so-called UK.

When your elderly PC is running slow, and you find yourself thinking "when did I last defrag that primary drive?" ... if you can't remember, do it now. And when the analysis has run, try not to pay attention to the screen, or any of the details on it, just click the defrag button and leave it well alone for a while. [sigh]

Ah well, at least I've got other things to be getting on with, and an alternative browsing machine, which means that I can leave it to get on with its Augean task.

Does anyone out use DELL computers? Do you have any which you're scrapping. Do you have spares of those little green plastic rails which you secure the HDD to in a DELL tower? Specifically, in this case, GX240s and GX260s, but it's probably a fairly universal DELL component. Three of the DELL PCs which had been donated to us were missing their HDD mounting rails (presumably scrapped along with the removed and shredded disks) - does anyone have six going spare and in need of a new home? You'd probably get a letter of thanks for your donation.

I've already asked DELL, but merely got the "our sponsorship programme is currently fully spent, but would you be interested in buying a reconditioned DELL?" No, although I had asked how much the rails would cost to buy, if they weren't able to donate some - however, I had to send a letter, as without an existing account or order number getting an email address for DELL is almost impossible.

[livejournal.com profile] cookwitch may have mentioned that the Pentax that she bought the other day from Jessops doesn't appear to be working especially well. [cough]

So we decided to upload a couple of the images to my computer, to see whether it was a fault of the LCD, or whether there was something up with the camera. On reflection, we had to go with the latter judgement.

So, for your delectation, delight and astonishment, never before seen by the paying public, I present ... photos from a buggered camera ...

I have a friend (WINOLJ, until we convince him of the error of his ways), who is looking for work in the Mac OSX support type field (and possibly such others as his aptitudes suit).

Can any of you lovely folks out there suggest agencies upon whose mercies he should throw his CV. Also, any other advice for currently unemployed support type folks?

We're trying to convince him to set up an LJ/website with his details on it, so that it would be easier for you'all to give him some advice, but he's somewhat disheartened at the moment.

Is it possible to create email addresses in Exchange (2000) which are not directly linked to a specific Active Directory user?

What I'm trying to achieve )

[livejournal.com profile] capt_prickle has now resolved this for me - the answer is create a Group object in AD, configured as a Distribution List ... I should have known that. Bugger.

Joy of Microsoft - one of our SQL databases is accessed via an Access front-end. Up until recently, ResearchFinn has been able to remove erroneous rows from the tables by bringing up the table in Access, selecting the row, and pressing Delete. Now, when she does that, an error box pops up which says:
ODBC--delete on a linked table 'dbo_tblAllData' failed.
[Microsoft][ODBC SQL Server Driver]Timeout expired (#0)
It also failed to delete when trying to use a delete query directly within SQL Server itself - it appeared to work when the query was run, but when the query box was then closed, it came up with an Operation cancelled by user message, and didn't commit. However, runnning a delete query from the Access front end worked. Eh?

Does anyone out there in LJ-land have anything positive or negative to say about any free, Windows-running, .pdf creation software?

For example pdf995? What do you use? What would you recommend?
