[grin] I won't ask whether anyone here knows anything about champagne, but I don't, personally.

We've got some bottles in the office, left over from an event, and the Fundraising department is wondering where on the scale of "good" to "pour down sink with nose held shut" they are ...

According to the label, it's "Sarcey Brut Champage Champagne", with "Private Cuvée", but there's nothing so classy as a date.

What is this stuff?

Drinking champagne from the bottle only cool if sprawled on satin sheets surrounded by nubile lovelies of the appropriate gender(s).

Or if you are bringing home a bottle of 1953 Perrier-Jouet home from work and the top comes off due to the vibration of the number 30 bus. Or doing it while giving an interview to the BBC, or standing with your partners on Streatham Common at midnight new year's eve 1999 drinking the finest vintages, taking e and watching London look like it's being shelled.

There have been advantages in working as a wine journalist for many years. On the other hand, even the best wine is not at it finest when it goes at speed up one's nose. Fortunately, I had a case.

I envy you and hate you in equal measure, and even more so for the case of PJ.

How did you get to be a wine journo? Such a cool job but not one I could do as I'd never be sober enough to write anything and I hate red wine.

Hmmm - not only a fizz expert, but friend of [livejournal.com profile] chiller as well. A double threat (or doubly fabulous).

I was already a journo and I applied to a job ad in the Guardian, I got the job because I already knew a bit about wine and because I could tell the publisher how to cook grouse off the top of my head. Sad but true.

May I friend you?

My dear, with your knowledge of fine wines, I shall be hanging on your every word!

If it's not too intrusive, where do we find your professional scribblings?
