[grin] I won't ask whether anyone here knows anything about champagne, but I don't, personally.

We've got some bottles in the office, left over from an event, and the Fundraising department is wondering where on the scale of "good" to "pour down sink with nose held shut" they are ...

According to the label, it's "Sarcey Brut Champage Champagne", with "Private Cuvée", but there's nothing so classy as a date.

What is this stuff?

Neither term is restricted under the appellation regulations for AC Champagne, so they are both variable by producer and so don't really mean much out of the context of the individual house, co-op or grower - they are marketing terms.

They are *these days*.

Bloody EU.

As far as I know they've never been restricted under the AC laws (which, in their various forms predate the EU). If I remember correctly the only restricted terms have been AC Champagne (N.V.), AC Champagne (vintage), Blanc de Blancs, Blanc de Noirs, Marc de Champagne (evil spirit) and whatever the appellation for still wines of Champagne is.
